My heart goes out to all those touched by the horrors of September 11th. Your pain and loss is all of ours. May God have open arms for all who lost their lives, give strength and courage to those to survived, solace to those who mourn, and have mercy on those responsible.May we not betray those losses by hasty and dangerous decisions and actions. Enough innocent people have died. Let us honor them by learning from what happened and trying to construct a better world where terrorism and indiscriminate anger and hate have no home.
And remember: Lashing out indiscriminately in anger at Arab-Americans or voicing hate and bigotry only makes us one with the terrorists who did this evil thing in the first place. Let us show the world not only our strength and resolve, but also our self-control and wisdom. Let the flag that we are all displaying so proudly today represent not only unity and solidarity, but also a firm and mature commitment to a better world. Tolerance and freedom are inseparable.
